Story Time Preparation Thornton Branch |
Story Time at Thornton Library
Story time at Thornton Library begins Wednesday, September 7th, at either 10:30 or 1:00. There will be approximately 20 minutes of stories, songs, and fingerplays for the children to do with Miss Sandy, the Children’s Librarian, followed by a craft activity for children and their caretakers to do together.
Our Wednesday Story Times for three to six year olds are a big step for some youngsters. Story time is designed to help
children learn many new skills, such as, meeting other children, listening to stories, following directions in a group, being attentive, learning to do crafts, and having experiences with good books.
Parents and guardians can help their child have a fun and valuable experience by following these suggestions:
-
Come to the library a few days before story time and introduce your child to Miss Sandy, the Children’s Librarian. Take a look at the place where story time will be held. Mention story time in the following days and tell your child how grown up he/she is to be able to go to story time without you.
-
Come early enough so your child can get a name tag and wait in the children’s area until Miss Sandy calls the children for story time. They feel more comfortable when they can ease into an activity, especially if they’re anxious about leaving their caretaker.
-
If you’re nervous, try not to let it show. Be excited about this new step your child is taking. Be supportive of your child’s efforts to participate. Tell your child you’ll be right outside and ready to come in to help when craft time begins.
-
All children are different. Some are quiet and just sit back and watch, while others love to participate. If your child is nervous or tearful, don’t be upset. Take your child home and try again another time. Let your child know it’s O.K., and that you’re sure he/she will be ready to try again on another day.
-
Leave favorite toys and snacks at home. They can be distracting to other children and may become lost.
We’re looking forward to welcoming your child to the Thornton Library for a fun experience. Join us!
