Safety on the Internet for Parents |
Tips for Online Safety for Parents
-
Get to know the Internet and
any services and functions that your child uses. Have your child show
you some of his or her favorite sites.
-
Set reasonable rules and
guidelines for computer use by your children. Discuss these rules and
make sure our children obey them, especially when it comes to the amount of
time your children spend on the computer.
-
Don't use the PC or the
Internet as a babysitter.
-
Get to know your children's
"online friends" just as you get to know all of their other
friends. People online may not be who they seem.
-
Help your children be
cyberspace smart and safe. Not everything they read or hear online may
be true. Teach them to be very careful about any offers that involve
coming to a meeting, having someone visit your house or school, or sending
money or credit card information.
-
If your child receives a
message or image, the intent of which is to harass, abuse, annoy or
threaten, or if you become aware of the transmission, use or viewing of
child pornography while online, report this to the National Center for
Missing or Exploited Children's Cyber Tipline at 1 800 843-5678.
