 Music and Movement

Tunes Teach Toddlers at the Library

We might want to add "rhythm" to the three "R"s of learining.  Children taking part in a Music and Movement program at the Commerce City Branch Library are picking up some valuable skills.  While the little ones are playing instruments and skipping, hopping, and dancing to songs, some important learning is actually underway.

The program is led by Children's Librarian Rene Bohn.  Ms. Rene plans the activities with the help of a professional lesson book.  For many of the children, this group is their first experience with interacting with an authority figure other than a parent.  While the tone is always gentle, listening and following directions are required.  Socializing and sharing is a must.

Music and Movement is recommended for children 18 months to 4 years.  The nature of the lessons offers different levels of learning.  The older children can experience some cognitive learning with an introduction to the names and function of instruments.  It's also a great place for non-English speaking children to learn the language.  And let's face it, most of us could use a does of jumping around bean bags, banging on sticks, and making some good noise.
